Mixed bag for Arunachal

We can not deny the fact that the year 2015 ends on a bad note for Arunachal Pradesh. Allegations of financial mismanagement leveled against ruling government and political upheaval have traumatized the very basic of the good governance in the state. Amidst political turmoil, unexpected entry of Governor in the power game has put a question mark on the neutrality of Raj Bhawan. Apart from this, Supreme Court order during September directing the Centre and state Govt to grant citizenship rights to Chakma-Hajong refugees had come as a bolt from the blue for the people of the state. And the latest trouble comes from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the development authority for Navi Mumbai, as it has decided to cancel allotment of a plot outside Vashi railway station to the government of Arunachal Pradesh citing breach of contract.

However, despite all these nay sayings there was a brighter side too.  Chief Minister’s Universal Health Insurance Scheme was acclaimed by other states of the country. The scheme proved to be beneficial, particularly for poor and needy patients of the state.  Moreover, the skill development and employment generation programme has succeeded to lure thousands of youth to become self-employed or to get job in private sectors. The on-going construction of mini-secretariat buildings and cement concrete roads in various districts will also bring solace to the people if completed within a specific period of time.

Let us hope, Arunachal Pradesh will witness hectic development activities in all fronts during the year 2016. It is hoped that infrastructure development activities including road connectivity will be accelerated during the new year.

Make it a year of achievements

Dear Editor,

Come December and we start to make different resolutions for the upcoming New Year so as to bring a new ‘dawn’ in our life! But each and every New Year see all things coming back to square one within a few days or at a maximum of few weeks! It seems resolutions are meant only to be broken! Moreover, a feeling of frustration creeps in when we fail to maintain the resolutions.

So instead of making resolutions for 2016, we can take refuge in memorable quotations of 3 eminent authors and poets.

1) ‘If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way’ — Napoleon Hill.

2) ‘Every moment is a fresh beginning’ — T.S.Eliot

3) ‘Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start now and make a brand new ending’ — Carl Bard.

If we adhere to these 3 messages and concentrate in performing our duties sincerely, provide utmost value to each moment of life and strive for a better future instead of lamenting over past faults and deficiencies; 2016 will automatically turn out to be a year of achievements.

Yours,

Kajal Chatterjee,

Need for effective wildlife conservation

Dear Editor,

Thanks for the sad report ‘Wildlife carcasses seized’ (AT, Dec 30) on the unfortunate status of wildlife poaching and trafficking in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. This incident realistically captures the dire state of wildlife conservation in the whole nation, not just the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Several SE Asian nations such as Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia serve as active hot bed of huge underground, international wildlife markets that finally find their customers in China, Japan, Korea, Russia, west Asia and other western countries.

It is extremely challenging to prevent such illegal harvest of wildlife for bush meat, trophy, illegal pet trade and related wildlife and wildlife product related industries; unless some joint arrangement of wildlife conservation including prevention of poaching and wildlife trade and trafficking is worked out between South and SE Asian nations rich in biodiversity, it is almost impossible to control this.

A joint conservation platform between SAARC and ASEAN could effectively help in intelligence sharing, joint conservation management and better surveillance of the target border points for preventing illegal trafficking of wildlife and wildlife products in the region. Hope the local governments of the concerned nations of South and SE Asia come together on a common platform for an effective regional conservation management of wildlife.

Yours,

Saikat Kumar Basu

Bye Bye 2015

Dear Editor,

In the year 2015,  many ups and down were seen,

Nature’s fury affected all, TN, Assam floods and a quake in Nepal,

Rains were scanty due to global warming, drought conditions crippled the farming,

A severe heat wave struck many states, thousands were killed in AP and other states,

Naxalites continued menacing attacks, claimed several security men’s lives,

Patel’s quota stir created ripples, it increased Gujarat Government’s pulse,

The beef spilled out of the dish, people wondered what should be in their dish,

The “intolerance” evoked detest, the “intellectuals” returned awards in protest,

The Naga peace accord became a new treaty, to recognise Naga history and ethnicity,

Indo-Bangla land accord, ended the age-old border discord,

Decades old Netaji’s death mystery, declassification of files will create new history,

ISIS continued to spread its tentacles, reduced Paris to shambles,

Diplomatic activism was at its top, PM went ahead with foreign trips non-stop,

The Pakistan is yet to relent, assurance to curb terrorism remains a big test,

The new year will be a leap year, but it should not a “beef” year,

Let’s hope that 2016, will be full of sparkle and sheen,

Yours,
